 根据徐贵祥同名小说改编。 铁匠的儿子石平阳带着父亲的嘱托参军来到炮兵部队。他的一股冲劲，受到营长庄必川的喜爱，老班长李四虎更喜欢石平阳不服输的劲头。李四虎是技术尖子，他对新战士训练十分严格，新战士进步很快。他把石平阳视作接班人，要在自己退伍之前把经验全部传授给石平阳，甚至以故意装病，让石平阳独立完成训练课目。石平阳进步很快，年终还荣立了三等功。和他一起入伍的女兵张媚对他也另眼看待。教导队招收骨干，进教导队就能报考军校，成为军官。营长担心比武缺了石平阳影响成绩，因此改派与石平阳一同入伍的王北风去了教导队。机会得而复失，石平阳有些想不通。父亲去世了，指导员让他回家料理，但他走到半路，想起父亲的嘱托，毅然返回连队。李四虎复员了，石平阳接任班长，他把老班长的好传统全部继承下来，爱兵、爱炮、爱部队，技术精益求精。同时入伍的王北风和张媚进了军校，石平阳仍然当班长。排长调走了，石平阳任代理排长，这时，他入伍已有八年。团里为了留住他，让他准备报考军校。就在这时，新战士刘发展一封虽事出有因但严重失实的告状信，使他又失去了上军校的机会。石平阳要复员了，副团长庄必川舍不得他离开，从车站把他接回，团党委特别决定把他留下。石平阳又回到排里，他对刘发展更严格、更耐心训练和要求，使刘发展深感内疚。几年后，参谋王北风到部队检查工作，见到石平阳仍是上士，不免生出许多感触。在集团军的军事演习中，石平阳指挥火炮群的准确射击，令首长和指挥员们赞叹不已。石平阳多年操纵的火炮由新式火炮取代了，他虽有些恋恋不舍，但他立即和战友们开始学习掌握新的火炮，迎接新的挑战。不久，石平阳被破格提拔为中尉连长。
